Ola Ope hails from Lagos, Nigeria but currently works as an attorney at the law firm, Varnum LLP in Grand Rapids, Michigan where she specializes in litigation and data privacy. Prior to this, she attended the University of Iowa College of Law where she studied law and served on the Iowa Journal of Corporate Law. She received her Bachelors of Art from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In her spare time, she also serves on the Varnum diversity committee and as Vice President of Treetops Collective. As a board member of AGOA, she serves as the logistics team lead for AGOA.
My name is David, I have been a part of A Glimpse of Africa since early 2020. I am very passionate about food and other cultures, in particular the vast arrays of cultures within the continent of Africa. That is why I find being a part of the food team such a great fit. I'm 32, newly married with 8 kids between the two of us. I'm from Northern Michigan but currently living in Elkhart, IN. I am an entrepreneur and am in the process of developing a gutter cover in which a portion of the profits will be used to fund rain harvesting methods in the dryer regions of Africa.
Fridah is the founder and CEO of A Glimpse of Africa and the owner of a small business namely , Flora’s Elegance Event’s Décor. Fridah also currently serves as member of the Board of Directors at SowHope, a youth leader at the African Community Fellowship church, and a community connector at the Amani program at Treetops. In 2013 Fridah founded the West Michigan Kenyan community where she served as the president until 2016. Fridah sits in the committee for covenant park. Fridah was born and raised in Kenya, moved to the United States in 2001, and later moved to the United Kingdom between 2002 and 2004. Fridah has lived, studied, and worked in the UK, USA and Kenya. What keeps her going is her passion to serve others, her faith in God, and the love of the wonderful people in her life. Her values ,compassion and love to serve others are inspired by her late mother, Ms. Flora who is her role model.
Sylvia Nyamuhungu is a Refugee community organizer in Grand Rapids Michigan from Church world service affiliated with Bethany Christian services.She works with refugee community leaders to better serve and advocate for former refugees and immigrants in michigan. Sylvia facilitates events and meetings that promote the welcome of refugees and immigrants in Michigan partnering with community leaders and local organizations.She works with community leaders to participate in meetings with elected officials advocating for pro refugees and immigrants policies. Sylvia is an experienced multilingual community worker, with a bachelor's degree in international development studies from Calvin University. She is highly experienced and passionate about working with refugees and immigrants and has dedicated her life to serving others and creating a welcoming place for them.
Currently, she serves as a Board Member of A Glimpse of Africa and part of the Social Media Team since December 2020. She is also a Board Member of the Refugee Education Center, while also serving on Community Food Club’s DEI Committee Board. Her family moved to the United States from Eritrea a month before she was born. She graduated from Grand Valley State University with a Bachelors of Science in Global Studies and Social Impact and a Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology with a certificate in Applied Anthropology. She is passionate about educating, supporting, and empowering the community. Her personal background as a child of immigrants, her education, and work experience affirms her desire to support people through important life transitions and provide a culture of opportunity for all people in our community. She is now working at an employment-based immigration company, Envoy Global.
Chioma Onukwuire is the Fashion Team Lead for AGOA. She has been with AGOA since 2019 and spearheaded the fashion show for AGOA’s cultural festival this year. Her alter ego is the CEO and founder of CHIMU. Chioma founded CHIMU in order to make African fashion more accessible in the US. She enjoys partnering up with other artisans, attending fashion shows, and creating collections.
My name is Josiane Ishongore. I am the volunteer team lead and a board member on A glimpse of Africa. I have been part of the volunteer team for alittle over a year and it has been great!
Lawrence Davids, originally from Liberia, West Africa, live in Michigan for 23 years now. I am a board member and one of the leads on the Entertainment team.
Blessing Bamiro-Utti is a medical/educational speech-language pathologist. She graduated from Andrews University with a Bachelor of Science in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Afterwards, she attended Western Michigan University and earned a Master of Art in Speech-Language Pathology. In 2019, Blessing earned a Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership from Chicago State University. Currently, Blessing, serves as the board chair for AGOA. She also serves as the board secretary for True Believers Community Connections, an organization that was established to address the issues, crisis, and needs of individuals and families in the inner city of Chicago. Blessing is a servant at heart. As a ministerial leader she directs the youth and kids ministry at Full Gospel Christian Assemblies International in Chicago, Il. Her skills include inspirational speaking, vision casting and strategic planning.
